What to do
There’s so much to see and do in and around Lincolnville that you’ll want to return again and again. And if you become a resident, you’ll find a wealth of leisure and recreational pursuits to choose from spring, summer, fall, and winter. Your year-round choices lie in Arts & Entertainment, Recreation, and Shopping, each with its own searchable Directory.
Arts & Entertainment
Midcoast Maine’s cultural activities enliven galleries, opera houses, seasonal fairs, libraries, and nationally recognized museums. Enroll in a culinary arts class with an award-winning chef at a local inn. Study photography at a world-class workshop. Put brush to canvas ina local art class. Or simply visit the studios and galleries of those who know what an inspiring and supporting environment this is in which to pursue artistic creation.
Rainy day? Explore our museums. The Center for Maine Contemporary Art is one of the state’s leading venues for current art. A few miles south in Rockland, the Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth Center includes works from three generations of Wyeths as well as changing exhibits from native American basket making to Impressionists and modern masters. The Maine Lighthouse Museum contains the largest collection of lighthouse lenses and artifacts in the United States. Other area museums display historic and maritime artifacts, antique vehicles, and even vintage toys memorabilia.
Check out musical and theatrical performances taking place in such venues as the recently renovated Camden and Rockport opera houses, the historic Strand Theatre in Rockland, the amphitheatre outside the Camden Public Library, outdoors on Rockland’s Public Landing, and the Strom Auditorium at Camden HIlls Regional High School in Rockport. Classical music, touring performers, conferences on technology and world affairs, blues and film festivals, and local theater, dance, and choral groups fill a busy year-round schedule. Consult our Events Calendar for a wide variety of offerings.
With scenic walks, parks, nature preserves, beaches, bike paths, and even a ski facility, our area invites visitors and residents to come out and play. Whether you want to spend an afternoon at a pick-your-own farm or orchard, go candlepin bowling, or test your agility on Ragged Mountain’s mountain-biking trails, family activities abound.
Take a sail- or powerboat around the bay on one of several day trips, charter your own vessel, or book several days’ passage on a vintage schooner where you can hoist the sails and take a turn at the helm or just relax and enjoy the sea breezes.
Pitch a tent under the swaying pines of Camden Hills State Park and spend a day hiking the forested foothills. Dive into the cool waters of Megunticook Lake or scout for polished stones and sea glass on Lincolnville Beach. Explore the hidden corners of the St George Peninsula. Play a round of golf. Rent a bike, or sign up for kayaking lessons.
Our nature preserves and education centers offer trails, woodlands, and gardens, as well as unforgettable birding and cross-country skiing opportunities.
Visit a country fair or food-themed festival, or ogle the varied scenery–from a farm of “Oreo cookie” cows to historic structures and landmarks you might recognize from several movies filmed here.
Although it’s hard to say what’s most appealing about our shops–the quality of the items inside, their proximity to the natural beauty of harbors and hills, or their quaint charm–one thing is certain: Each offers an experience as distinct as its merchandise, from hand-painted pottery, fine jewelry, and books to home decor, gifts, and souvenirs. Peek inside a furniture showroom and watch the artisans at work. Discover a rustic barn converted into a winery, gallery, or studio.
It’s no wonder the area is a favorite year-round retail destination. In addition to our regular offerings, our calendar is full of special shopping events, from art and craft festivals to holiday celebrations. And don’t worry if the shopping bug hits while you’re traveling through our area; many establishments are happy to ship your merchandise home.
